So how are we going to accomplish all this?

Harriet B's Daughters is built on 3 pillars: helping each other, modeling best practices in our workplaces, and embracing and promoting diversity and inclusion in our work products.

Helping each other

We help each other both within peer/experience groups and across generations, through a wide variety of activities, including:

  • Monthly networking via google hangouts, organized by experience level
  • Events at major conferences (eg, mixers, dinners)
  • Google hangouts/webinars on specific topic areas (eg, 'what's it like working in-field?')
  • 1:1 mentoring
  • Group mentoring opportunities (eg, project management mentoring groups across experience levels)
  • Resume review
  • Job postings on our blog
  • Outreach to universities and colleges
  • Resources for mentoring

Modeling best practices

Part of changing our industry for the better is bringing these ideals into our workplaces and job sites. Through our mentorship and networking, we will arm our members with tools and techniques they can apply in their daily lives. We also help change the conversation through additional efforts, including:

  • Curated resources for use in discussion groups, training, and brown bags
  • Whitepapers
  • Presentations at industry events
  • Promotion of talks and panels focused on diversity issues

Promoting diversity and inclusion in what we do

We've all experienced the sensation of unending exclusionary homogeneity and toxicity in popular culture, whether it's whitewashing Avatar: The Last Airbender when it came to the big screen or the parade of perfectly thin blonde heroines who aren't self-rescuing princesses. And we're all well aware that the Bechdel test is legitimately a thing. Because we are involved in the creation of experiences that millions of people see, we have a very unique opportunity to meaningfully move the needle when it comes to representing diversity in popular culture. Representation matters, and we'll promote that through a variety of methods including:

  • Guidelines for inclusivity and diversity in art and written narratives
  • Diversity resources, including supporting scholarly articles on the effects of representation and diversity in popular culture
  • Tools and techniques for seamlessly making increased diversity a natural part of workflow
